CHUMS – Your Shades Best Friend

After you’re grabbed a pair of high quality polarized sunglasses that won’t let you down at the beach you need to grab a pair of Chums!
Why Chums?
Chums has been creating sunglass straps for over 34 years.
Chums was founded in 1983. By a white water river guide who needed to keep the sunglasses secured to his head.
With a simple and easy to use product Chums became extremely popular because they are applicable for all kinds of use.
You can use Chums when you’re…
- At the beach
- Playing sports
- Talking a walk outside
- Jogging in the morning
- At a concert
- Fishing
Also, they’re perfect for everyday things like walking into the grocery store, or running your daily errands. Instead of hanging your sunglasses on the V or neck of your shirt, or your shirt pocket…
With CHUMS – just take the sunglasses off your face and let go! They’ll catch ‘em!
What Types Of Chums Are There?
We’ll be covering 8 categories of Chums, but within those categories we’ll have a look at several different styles.
Every strap below will have these 3 features listed:
Furthermore, we’ll discuss some other aspects i.e. like how some of the neoprene Chums may not a good choice if you drive a fast boat.
Most of all, we made sure to mention the negatives to each sunglass strap so you can choose the right pair for yourself (or a friend).
One of the great things about Chums is they aren’t expensive. If you’re looking for 2 or 3 different types of eye wear retainers you won’t be burning a hole in your wallet.
Cotton Chums
Cotton CHUMS

- 100% Cotton makes these comfortable on your ears/behind your ears
- Fit most frames
- Fits most situations to where them in
- Can be slightly difficult to slide the adjustable bead on cotton when it’s wet, but barely even noticable
- Takes longer to dry than other retainers as it absorbs water
You know what they say – less is more.
These sunglass straps are 100% cotton, and come with an adjustable bead to string your shades tight to your head if you’re swimming, or running, or moving quickly.
One of the aspects that sets the cotton retainers from other knockoff brands…the piece that slips over the frame.
While other sunglass straps choose to go the ‘ONLY cotton’ route [mistake] – Chums makes a higher quality product here with squishy inserts at the ends of their retainers that surround the frame.
This makes Chums much easier to slip on and off the frame.
Therefore, the knockoff brands that lack these inserts are difficult to put on / take off your frames and when you DO get them on… the cotton sort of rolls over itself which can be quite annoying.
…sort of like getting really sweaty and trying to put on long athletic socks.
The Chums original is usable for any type of wear, but we will note if you use these in the water or the snow they actually hold water compared to other styles that don’t.
Snow will stick to these as well if you are using them for skiing / snowboarding
Chums Original
When most think of the Chums brand they think of this style. This is the style of sunglass straps that MADE this company.
- Material: 100% Cotton
- Length: 5”
- Weight: .5 oz
Chums Cotton Small End
The cotton small ends are just like the original, but are meant for smaller frames (wire frames too) considering the size of the ends.
- Material: 100% Cotton
- Length: 5”
- Weight: .4 oz
Also, same length as the original, and one tenth of an ounce less (you won’t notice).
Chums Cotton Large End
These sunglass straps are made for thicker frames.
- Material: 100% Cotton
- Length: 5”
- Weight: .4 oz
And if you have a pair of Costas (or any brand) that you fish with, and the frame is ¾”, or wider you probably want to grab a pair of these, or checkout the floating sunglass straps below which are meant for the water.
Chums Cotton No Tail Adjustable
The Chums ‘no tail’ is a great style if you don’t like the ‘ponytail’ type strand from the original handing down on your back or neck.
- Material: 100% Cotton
- Smallest Adjustable Length: 10”
- Largest Adjustable Length: 21”
- Weight: .3 oz
Because they’re ‘no tail’…these sunglass straps have 1 continuous loop with 2 adjusters on either side.
Chums Kids Cotton
The kids version of the original sunglass straps is 2 inches shorter.
- Material: 100% Cotton
- Length: 5”
- Weight: .3 oz
Adults can buy these too if you don’t care for the length of the regular size.
Rope Chums
Rope CHUMS

Not only are these chums made of nylon rope to last a lifetime – they also have molded tips that do not slip & GRIP the tips of your frames.
Most of these (with the exception of the Slip Fit) will stay off your ears as well. So if you don’t want to feel your sunglass straps on top of your ears we recommend these styles.
- Excellent grippage at the end of your frames
- Stays off ears
- Nylon rope is super easy to slide the adjuster on (even when wet)
- If your shades are wide at the tip you may struggle to get these on.
Universal Fit 3mm
These sunglass straps are made of 3mm of woven nylon rope with molded tips at the end.
- Material: Nylon Rope
- Length: 5”
- Weight: .3 oz
Great for any occasion!
Universal Fit 5mm
2mm thicker than the ones above these are a little ‘beefier’.
- Material: Nylon Rope
- Length: 5”
- Weight: .3 oz
Slip Fit
These are the only rope chums that don’t attach to the end of the frame. We liked how the frames stayed ‘put’ when running them through these tips, but one thing to watch for is the size of your frame.
Size of frame is the most important thing to consider if you like the ‘slip on style’
- Material: Nylon Rope
- Length: 14”
- Weight: .3 oz
If you have real skinny frames these sunglass straps will be too loose, and if you have big frames it may not even fit through the loop.
Fish Tip
Awesome gift for your friend who loves to fish! The molded tips are actually fish, and their mouths slip over the frame.
- Material: Nylon Rope
- Length: 5”
- Weight: .3 oz
Something else worth mentioning: The molded fish tips aren’t too big by any means, but are still noticeable enough to tell they aren’t standard tips.
Ranchero
Just like all of the other rope retainers, but comes with an ‘articulated temple’. In the picture you can see one portion of the molded tip slips over the frame, and the backend sort of ‘angles’ down and is able to move about or hang freely.
- Material: Nylon Rope
- Length: 13”
- Weight: .3 oz
If your frames don’t have any down slope behind your ears, and they are straight frames these will work for you well.
Entrada
These were our favorite out of all the rope Chums. Why?
The 2mm nylon rope wraps around a stainless steel framework, and the tops are also adaptive and don’t go just straight off the frame.
- Material: Nylon Rope
- Length: 16”
- Weight: .2 oz
While these sunglass straps are certainly the most heavy duty of all the rope styles – they’re actually the lightest in weight.
Kids Rope
- Material: Nylon Rope
- Length: 9”
- Weight: .3 oz
Unlike the kids cotton – where adults probably COULD buy them for themselves, the kids rope version is only 9” in length so may be hard to get your head through if you plan to keep these on your glasses a lot.
Neoprene Chums
Neoprene CHUMS

The neoprene chums are the best choice for you if your goal is to show off a fun print, or you’re looking to stand out with color. Not only do these dry very quickly, but they are also very lightweight for the amount of material you’re dealing with.
Avoid these sunglass straps if you are going to be boating, skiing, or flying at high speeds.
Due to the width they can act as a ‘sail’ for them to be flying in the wind behind your head.
Luckily, all of these go pretty far up the frame to help combat that, and to help with comfort & fit, but something to keep in mind.
- Noticeable colors and styles from far away
- These go FAR up your frame so for daily use it’s almost guaranteed they don’t fall off unless you rip them off
- Dries quickly when wet
- Lightweight
- Acts as a ‘sail’ if you’re traveling at high speeds
Neoprene Solids
Bright & solid colors so you can sport your favorite one and stand out in the crowd.
- Material: Neoprene
- Length: 16”
- Weight: .2 oz
Neoprene Print
These chums will make your friends want a pair.
- Material: Neoprene
- Length: 9”
- Weight: .3 oz
Neoprene Large End
Larger openings for your wide frames. The standard will go pretty high up on most frames so get these if you have some monster glasses!
- Material: Neoprene
- Length: 16”
- Weight: .3 oz
These can also do some light floatation. Will float up to 18g (.6oz)
Floating Chums
Floating CHUMS

Perfect for fishing, surfing, swimming at the lake, or deep sea fishing!
When your shades fall in the water with these on you won’t be losing them!
- Saves your glasses from the depths of the ocean/pool/lake!
- High visibility colors if you’re trying to find them or want to stand out
- Some are bulky which can be bothersome on top of the ears
- Could be too heavy for normal everyday use
Halfpipe
The Halfpipe Chums are lightweight and have a latex tube design.
- Material: Latex
- Length: 8.625”
- Weight: .3 oz
These floaters are definitely on the slimmer side so can be good for everyday use as they aren’t heavy or bulky. Strapping these right to the back of your head is easy if you’re out boating or on the sea-doo.
These chums float up to .2oz, or 5 grams of weight.
Floating Halfpipe
Just like the regular half pipe in terms of material (latex), but they don’t have an adjustable bead.
- Material: Latex
- Length: 15”
- Weight: 1.1 oz
Instead, these retainers have 2 floats on the end of it, and can handle up to .9 more oz than the halfpipe.
They will float a total of 1.1 oz, or 32 grams of weight.
Floating Neo
Neoprene material filled with cell foam – these Chums will float up to 1.3 oz.
- Material: Neoprene
- Length: 15”
- Weight: .4 oz
Comes with great high visibility colors if you need to turn the boat around to find them.
Neo Megafloat
This is the BIG DADDY of the floaters. If you have a heavy pair of sunglasses and losing them is NOT an option then these are your sunglass straps.
- Material: Neoprene
- Length: 5”
- Weight: .4 oz
They are made of neoprene, and filled with more cell foam than the ones above.
The Neo Megafloat Chums will float up to 3 oz. That’s almost a quarter pound!!
Glassfloat Classic
These Chums have been around since the 90’s and have been one of their best sellers for a reason…
- Material: Soft woven polyester (foam filled)
- Length: 15”
- Weight: .4 oz
It floats up to 1.5 oz of weight, and keeps a spot on the comfort scale with the material, and slender style for everyday wear.
Made of foam-filled woven polyester it’s going to feel nice on your ears and will actually dry quicker than the cotton material in the Chums Original.
Cotton Glassfloat
Like the buoy look?
You’ll be able to find these quickly once you drop your sunglasses in the water.
- Material: 100% cotton
- Length: 12”
- Weight: .5 oz
Just like the Chums original up top, but with a float on the back. Floats up to .7oz
Universal Fit Glassfloat
If you like the floatie look, but also want the molded tips from the Chums rope styles mentioned previously these are an easy pickup for you.
- Material: Nylon Rope
- Length: 10.75”
- Weight: .5 oz
In addition, they float up to .7 oz in weight.
Silicone Chums
Silicone CHUMS

Silicone chums are slightly stretchy if you have kids that like to tug on your stuff.
The great part is these instantly dry getting out of the water, and don’t absorb any. They are UV and corrosion resistant so durability isn’t an issue here (just like with the other styles).
- UV Resistant
- Corrosion Resistant
- Non-absorbant
- Stretchy
- Silicone can ‘pull’ or rub the hair on your neck when you aren’t wearing your glasses
Ratchet
The tips on the Chums Ratchet adjust in 4 different positions.
Therefore, if you needed the retainer to be more ‘out of the way’ you can always point them down.
- Material: Silicone
- Length: 12”
- Weight: .5 oz
Switchback
The Chums Switchback is one solid piece. Unlike the ratchets they are slimmer where it connects to the frame, and you can wear them 2 different ways.
- Material: Silicone
- Length: 17.75”
- Weight: .5 oz
You can wear them so they hang down, or you can flip them upside down on your frames so they stick straight out.
Orbiter Chums
Orbiter CHUMS

Chums Orbiters are ALL made of strong and lightweight materials.
Don’t have to worry about a ‘pull’ breaking them, and they have a low-key style if that’s what you’re going for.
- Lightweight
- High-grade durable materials
- Not a ‘look at my colors’ type style, but does its job well
- Tips that go over frames aren’t as widely applicable as other styles of chums
The Orbiter
The Chums Orbiter is made of stainless steel so don’t let the thin wire deceive you for being a weak material. It’s plenty strong.
- Material: Stainless Steel Wire
- Length: 15.5” (Regular) / 17” (Long)
- Weight: .1 oz
It’s available in 2 different lengths, and has ‘active’ tips that adjust by bending to your activity.
The Adjustable Orbiter
Of all the different styles of Chums these are the easiest to adjust.
- Material: Stainless Steel Wire
- Length: 9.75” (Smallest) / 16” (Largest)
- Weight: .1 oz
The adjusters act like ‘tabs’ and they are easy to increase or decrease in length depending on how tight/loose you need them.
The Mono Orbiter
Instead of stainless steal the Mono Chums are made of ultra-light mono-filament (used in some types of fishing lines).
- Material: High Tenacity Monofilament
- Length: 15.5” (Regular) / 17” (Long)
- Weight: .1 oz
